The 3rd Japan Times Bee


The Japan Times will be hosting  Japan’s 3rd spelling bee contest on March 10, 2012.  Your schools are welcome to participate in The 3rd Japan Times Bee.

The winner of the contest will  earn the right to compete  in the final of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. as the representative  from  Japan.
Round-trip travel and hotel accommodations will be provided for the winner of the contest and one escort.

◆ Enrollment and Registration Fee

Schools are required to register at the Scripps National Spelling Bee website ( spellingbee.com ) and The Japan Times Bee website as well.

  1. Name of key spelling contact
  2. E-mail address  – We will send the information about The Japan Times Bee to the registered e-mail address.
  3. Phone number
  4. School’s name
  5. School’s address  – Schools on U.S. military bases need to provide us with U.S. address and the Japanese mailing address.

Please follow the directions on the Scripps National Spelling Bee website
and remit the registration fee to the spelling coordinator no later than the deadlines below.
The Japan Times will be accepting 1 winning speller from each registered school.
*Please note that 1 registration fee only entitles you to send 1 speller.  In the case that your school has more than one part, for example an elementary and middle school, then you will need to register these seperately and pay 2 registration fees if you want to send a winning speller from each to our Japan Times Bee next year.

Encyclopædia Britannica is offering TWO freeone-year gift subscriptions to Britannica Online for Kids (a $69.95 value each) for schools that enroll by September 30.

We will have a late enrollment period from October 18 through December 16 in which $75 per school late fee will apply. 

*Please note that schools need to be registered at the Scrips National Spelling Bee website and The Japan Times no later than the above deadline.
*The Bee sets participants’ maximum grade level at the eighth grade.
The speller must not have passed beyond the eighth grade on or before February 1, 2012.
The speller must not have reached his/her 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2011.
The Japan Times sets the minimum grade level at the third grade.
