The Japan Times Website: Misawa spelling prodigy wins 6th Japan Times Bee   Congratulations to Sean Fogerty, age 13, from Robert D. Edgren High School on the Misawa Air Base for winning the 6th Japan Times Bee!
Following 19 rounds, the championship round came down to Fogerty and Ganesh Gautham Elango, from K. International School Tokyo in Koto Ward.
The winning word was “snood,” which means “a net or fabric bag for confining a woman’s hair pinned or tied on at the back of the head.”
Sean will represent Japan in the upcoming Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
A job well done to all the participating spellers!

]]> Oral Vocabulary element https://bee.japantimes.co.jp/2015/01/26/oral-vocabulary-element/ Mon, 26 Jan 2015 04:40:58 +0000 http://spelling-bee.japantimes.co.jp/?p=2397 We will have a formal Oral Vocabulary Round on March 14th.  This information was announced several times, but we would like to remind you of this.
This will be inserted after the break in the latter rounds.
Spellers will be eliminated if they fail to get the definition correct.
As such, we advise you to practice for and have this Oral Vocabulary element.
All materials for the vocabulary round section can be found in your teacher’s beehive on the Scripps website. The vocabulary round or rounds can be inserted into your bee at any point.
We will start our 2015 Japan Times bee with a warm up spelling round where spellers WILL NOT be eliminated for making a mistake. The purpose of this warm up round is to get used to using the microphone.

The Japan Times is pleased to announce that it will hold its 6th spelling bee on Saturday, March 14th 2015.

This year’s early bird registration fee is $130.  Early bird registration ends on Oct 15th. There is then a standard registration period from Oct 16th to Dec 12th which costs $205.

Only one school  can enroll per one registration fee. If your school has two or more parts etc…then additional enrollment fees will need to be paid for each additional school.

 To enroll you must sign up at both sites below.  Registering at one of these sites only will mean an incomplete and unfinished application. It is also important that you do both registrations at the same time.

 When registering please ensure that
